School Blues

Dear A,

It is obvious to me that you are investing your heart and soul into learning computer programming. You must have so much going on in your life, and I highly commend you for attempting to learn programming in the manner you are. Not many people could learn programming from a book via distance learning with very little interaction from a professor. Given the fact that you have no mentor or close peers to help you either is highly impressive. I really don't know how you manage to juggle all that you have going on right now, and I want you to know that anytime you need help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.

All the best,
Your professor

That is what I want to hear, but that is not what I hear. I am currently enrolled in a class that, even before the class started, the professor sent me messages telling me I should drop it. He had no point of reference whatsoever with me, so it's not like he was basing this on past performance. Is it because I am a girl, or because he is just determined to be right? He has continued to send me the same messages throughout the entire class, and it is getting really old. Isn't it great to be doing something that is immensely difficult, and have someone tell you you can't or shouldn't do it? Dummkopf!

So, I decided to write myself a nice letter to console myself. How else am I supposed to turn off those negatory cogs spinning in my head? You tell me! But DO, tell me, how do YOU turn off those negatory cogs?

  1. That's really cruddy of your professor to do that to you. I think that is a great letter to yourself. Keep up the good work. For me once those negatory cogs get moving it's hard for me to stop them and they kind of have to run their course which usually lasts a day or two.

  2. Awe, thanks! The tough thing is that I have several more classes from the same prof. and it's not like I am doing terribly in the class. I just don't get it. I wish I was more like my good husband. He lets things roll off his back like water on a duck.

  3. Dear A,
Just ignore this SOB. He's not the first one you've met in your life, and he won't be the last. Just think of how immensely satisfying it's going to be to prove him wrong.
    Love, Me

  4. I agree with the previous comment... I'm returning to school as a pre-med student after beginning a teaching career, and there are plenty of people who talk to me about it as though this is "just a phase" and I'll "come to my senses" soon. You go, girl! Chase those dreams, and just let those nay-sayers watch you do it! :)

    Following now, by the way...
